Through the Copyright Act 1968, Australian law recognises that individuals have the right to protect the moral and economic interests arising from creative works. As well as protecting creative works, copyright laws give authors an incentive to continue to create new material.
Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) is an Australian copyright management company whose role is to provide a bridge between creators and users of copyright material. They supply educational providers with a licence that allows them to legally make copies of, or reproduce copyright works for educational purposes.
If your institution is covered by a CAL statutory licence you are allowed to reproduce the following:
- Books: no more than 10% or one chapter of the book
- Periodicals: one article from any issue or two or more articles if they are on the same subject
- Anthologies: one literary or dramatic work from a published anthology providing it doesn’t constitute more than 15 pages
- Unavailable works: all or part if a new copy cannot be obtained in a reasonable time
Please note there is no limit to the amount of copies that can be made as long as they are to be used for educational purposes and not resold at a profit.
Check with your administrators if you are unsure if your institution has a CAL licence.
